Understanding suicide risk in OCD patients

About this live event

For clinicians and consultants, assessing suicide risk in patients with severe OCD is one of the most complex and high-stakes challenges we face. The distress and hopelessness caused by relentless intrusive obsessions about self harm can create a significant, yet often hidden, risk. We will review evidence based protocols for assessing suicide risk specifically within the OCD population, providing clear guidance for managing these complex cases with confidence.

Learning Objectives

  • Recognize and communicate the magnitude of suicide risk in OCD using current prevalence and population-based evidence.
  • Differentiate suicidal obsessions from suicidal ideation while detecting overlap, change over time, and co-occurring risk.
  • Apply an OCD-informed suicide assessment and response plan that integrates history, symptoms, comorbidity, functioning, means safety, and treatment.

  • Wilfredo Rivera-Pérez, Psy.D.

    Dr. Wilfredo Rivera-Pérez is the Clinical Director at NBI Coral Gables and a bilingual licensed psychologist with expertise in OCD, anxiety, Tourette's Syndrome, and impulse-control challenges. Originally from Puerto Rico, he brings a culturally attuned approach to therapy. Dr. Rivera uses CBT strategies and supports both individual therapy and family consultation. In addition to his clinical work, he supervises NBI staff and leads a free OCD support group. He has received specialized training from the International OCD Foundation and in DBT techniques.

    NBI is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. NBI maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

    NBI is approved by the Authorized Continuing Education program to sponsor continuing education for Board Certified Behavior Analysts. NBI maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

  • National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC)

    Neurobehavioral Institute (NBI) has been approved by the National Board for Certified Counselors as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 7933. NBI is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs.

NBI Grievance Procedure

NBI is fully committed to conducting all activities in strict conformance with the American Psychological Association's Ethical Principles of Psychologists. NBI will comply with all legal and ethical responsibilities to be non-discriminatory in promotional activities, program content and in the treatment of program participants. The monitoring and assessment of compliance with these standards will be the responsibility of the program administrator in consultation with the members of the continuing education committee.
While NBI goes to great lengths to assure fair treatment for all participants and attempts to anticipate problems, there will be occasional issues which come to the attention of the NBI staff which require intervention and/or action. This procedural description serves as a guideline for handling such grievances.

1. When a participant, either orally or in written format, files a grievance and expects action on the complaint, the following actions will be taken.

If the grievance concerns a speaker, the content presented by the speaker, or the style of presentation, the individual filing the grievance will be asked to put their comments in written format. The program administrator will then pass on the comments to the speaker, assuring the confidentiality of the grieved individual.

2. If the grievance concerns a presentation, its content, level of presentation, or the facilities in which the presentation was offered, the program administrator will mediate and will be the final arbitrator. If the participant requests action, the program administrator will:
a. attempt to move the participant to another presentation or
b. provide a credit for a subsequent presentation or
c. provide a partial or full refund of the presentation fee.

Actions 2b and 2c will require a written note, documenting the grievance, for record keeping purposes. The note need not be signed by the grieved individual.

3. If the grievance concerns the NBI CE program, in a specific regard, the program administrator will attempt to arbitrate.

Tickets will be refunded if canceled 24 hours in advance of the program.

The confidentiality of participants will be protected, including both their identities and any written information they provide to NBI. Information will be kept electronically and only accessible to program staff.

Attendance Policy

Participant attendance will be recorded via Zoom attendance records. Participants must be present for the duration of the program in order to receive full credit. Half credit will not be awarded. After the program concludes, certificates will be distributed via email.
